Should I wait until I am in remission before I have sex?
Sometimes, in the first month or two of taking your new CML drug, your infection fighting cells (neutrophils) can drop before they improve. During this time, you are at risk of getting an infection if there is any tear or rip in your skin, so you should temporarily avoid sex. Your doctor will tell you when your bloodwork returns to normal, or at least to a safe level.
Can my partner catch CML if we have unprotected sex?
No, your partner cannot catch CML. This is not infectious. It is completely safe to have intercourse for the partner.
Do CML medications prevent pregnancy?
No, CML drugs do not prevent pregnancy. You need to use a form of protection during sex.
Can CML cause erectile dysfunction?
No, CML drugs do not cause erectile dysfunction, but the stress of a new diagnosis of cancer can cause this problem.
Is a person with CML at a higher risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease?
No, a person with CML is not at a higher risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease, nor are they protected. It is always recommended to practice safe sex.
Can medications affect libido?
It is possible that CML drugs might cause a decreased libido. Some side effects (e.g., fluid retention) can also make you feel less sexual and the stress of a cancer diagnosis can also do this.
Is it safe to masturbate?
Yes, it is safe to masturbate with this diagnosis. Just remember, sometimes, in the first month or two of taking your new CML drug, your infection fighting cells (neutrophils) can drop before they improve. During this time, you are at risk of getting an infection if there is any tear or rip in your skin. Your doctor will tell you when your bloodwork returns to normal, or at least to a safe level.
